Newfoundland Rent Increase Rules: No Cap, But Real Limits

Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the provinces with no rent control — there's no percentage limit on increases. But timing and notice rules still apply, and they're your main protection.

No Cap on the Amount

Newfoundland and Labrador has no rent control, so there's no legal maximum percentage for a rent increase. The timing and notice rules — plus your ability to move — are the real protections.

Only Once Every 12 Months

Rent can't be increased more than once in a 12-month period, and not during a fixed term.

Long Written Notice

The landlord must give substantial written notice: at least 8 weeks for a month-to-month tenancy, and 6 months for a yearly tenancy. Short notice isn't valid.

Your Real Leverage

Because there's no cap, the market and your lease are the main checks. A fixed-term lease locks your rent for the whole term. If an increase is unaffordable, you can give notice and move at the end of your term.
