What is the security deposit limit in Illinois?
Illinois has no statewide cap on the deposit amount. For landlords with five or more units, the Security Deposit Return Act requires an itemized statement within 30 days and a refund within 45 days of move-out. Chicago's RLTO adds interest and stricter rules.

Where you rent matters: a Chicago tenant gets the RLTO's deposit-interest and penalty protections, while elsewhere in Illinois the thinner state statutes apply (765 ILCS 710 / 715).
